The Township of St. Clair is currently seeking a Summer Student to fill a Curatorial Assistant position at the Sombra Museum.

Principal responsibilities for this position involve implementing interpretive programs and planning and executing outreach activities; designing and installing displays; assisting with artifact cataloguing and photo-documentation; researching and producing interpretive materials; marketing the museum in general; executing and marketing specific events and programs; as well as research of local people, places, and businesses for the public and for museum projects.

Other duties include digitizing records and archival materials; general office duties other day-to-day tasks associated with museum operation; light cleaning, gardening, and depending on Covid-19 restrictions, frontline interaction with the public (leading tours, contactless curbside gift shop orders and answering tourism and research inquiries); leading in-person educational tours and/or adapting them for online use may be required.

Social media and website management will be key responsibilities including creating and posting content on a regular basis, responding to messages, updating museum information, and editing pages, as necessary.

The ideal candidate will be a student in museum studies, history or a related field, although students of diverse educational fields and backgrounds are welcome to apply. Computer science, marketing and data management students may also be an ideal fit. Passion for the subject matter is an important attribute of the ideal candidate.

• Demonstrated organizational and research skills, excellent written and spoken English, creativity, and ability to work well with the public, both children and adults, of different skills and abilities
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
• Computer skills must be sufficient to carry out tasks and will require use of Microsoft Office, email, internet, social media and printer/scanner/copier.
• Possess strong interpersonal skills, time management skills, versatility.
• Artistic skills, photography, familiarity with scanning equipment and PastPerfect software are assets.

This position is funded through the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations and as such the student must meet the following requirements:
• be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada (Note: Non-Canadian students or graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.).
• be legally entitled to work in Canada;
• be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory;
• be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; and
• not have another full-time job during the YCW work assignment.
• Students in an YCW employment program must also:
• have registered as a high school, college, CEGEP, or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
• intend to return to studies during or after the YCW work assignment.”
