Sodium in Groundwater – Important Notice from Lambton Public Health

Lambton Public Health has been notified by the Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network (PGMN) that groundwater samples tested from monitoring wells in the Township of St. Clair contain higher than normal levels of sodium and are above the acceptable limits set by the Ontario Drinking Water Standards. PGMN wells are used for monitoring purposes only and not for drinking water. Municipal water systems are not part of this program.

Higher than normal sodium levels in PGMN wells may indicate that sodium levels in the local groundwater are also above acceptable levels. Therefore, Lambton Public Health is encouraging homeowners living in the Township of St. Clair who use private wells for drinking water, to test their wells for sodium.

Parking By-Laws Address Township Safety / Property Standards Issues

The newest addition to the by-law prohibits the parking of boats on the road when not attached to a vehicle bearing a current license. It also prohibits the parking of any type of vehicle on boulevards. This component of the by-law has been brought about because people have been parking trailers and boats in exterior side yars. Tickets of $20 per offence will be issued to those who do not comply.

The second requirement restricts hours of parking along public streets and roads during winter months beginning Dec. 1. Between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., all vehicles must be kept off of public thoroughfares to allow township works staff to operate snow removal equipment efficiently and safely for the benefit of everyone who uses these streets and roads.

FMAlert system provides fast emergency warnings

The FM Alert system will allow almost instant communication between the public and emergency personnel. When the program is in full swing, every residence will have a small receiver that can be activated via a radio signal and large public buildings such as schools will be outfitted with larger receivers. When activated, these units sound an alarm, exhibit a flashing red light, and display a brief digital message indicating the nature of the emergency. The township has been divided into eight areas and the system will be instituted in stages, with the most vulnerable areas in Corunna being the first areas to be activated. This system will replace the telephone call system, which proved to be insufficient to the needs of the township. The FM Alert system will be operated in partnership with Blackburn Radio and St. Clair County, Michigan. St. Clair Township Fire Chief Roy Dewhirst says this is ideal since severe storms usually track through St. Clair County first. This allows for a timely warning to be issued and allows residents to take immediate, appropriate action. Each residential unit is worth $30, but the municipality will be subsidizing its purchase by two thirds.

The units are be available at the Emergency Services building at the corner of Lyndoch and Hill Streets in Corunna, at the St. Clair Township Civic Centre in Mooretown, or at the Corunna Home Hardware.
